"Communication in research groups" 24th and 26th of November 2020

As researchers, we communicate with colleagues, collaborators, students, supervisors, industry partners, committee members and staff on a regular basis. Conversations frequently cover sensitive topics such as grading, authorship and differences in expectations. Our discussion partners are often from different disciplines, they share different cultural backgrounds and have different professional experience and different personal interests. “Not being on the same wavelength” can present a significant threat to working together effectively. This lecture teaches you ways to change how others perceive you as well as how you perceive them, making it much easier to stay committed, constructive and proactive together. Learning goals include: • Identifying what you can and cannot influence in (transient) relationships • Managing expectations of everyday conversations • Discovering powerful methods for raising self-awareness about staying constructive and proactive The workshop takes place 24th+ 26thof November 17:00 -19:00 via zoom. Fun Event - Hidden Figures – 9th February 2017

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th, we went to the Corso cinema and watched "Hidden Figures" with a group of 34 ladies from D-CHAB. This inspiring movie is based on a true story about three innovative black women who made significant scientific contributions in the NASA in the early 60ies. Career Event - Behind the Scenes of Equal Salary at PMI Science – 10th November 2016

On the occasion of our autumn Career Event we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Moira Gilchrist, Director Scientific Engagement at PMI Science, who talked about how Philip Morris International got to become the first multinational company in Switzerland to obtain the Equal Salary label for equal pay of women and men.

This year we had the honor to host the Director of the Swiss Federal Department for Gender Equality, Ms. Sylvie Durrer, who gave a talk on "Gender Equality in Switzerland - in legal terms and in practice". Lecture Event - Reflections on Women Scientists and Engineers of ETH Zürich – 25th November 2015

This event provided more information about the gender balance at ETH Zürich, what a diversified environment can bring and what is done to encourage women to pursue scientific careers. This lecture was given by ETH Rector Professor Sarah Springman. The insightful talk was followed by a vivid panel discussion with Professor Chiara Daraio, Professor Donald Hilvert, Professor Massimo Morbidelli and Professor Shana J. Sturla about the status and opportunities of women at ETH.

Career Event - Careers for Scientists Away from the Bench – 11th June 2015

The aim of our first career event of 2015 was to give some insight into careers outside the traditional academic and industry pathways. Our four guests have careers that started very much like ours (they all have scientific PhDs), and they then moved away from the bench to jobs where the use of their PhDs did not require research or lab work. Our guests were Dr. Anna Garry (Outreach Officer for the NCCR-MUST), Dr. Lorena Piticco (Patent Attorney Trainee at Isler & Pedrazzini AG), Dr. Marie-Christine Fluet (Founder of ReHaptix) and Dr. Melanie Wiesel (Inventions, patents and licences, ETH Transfer). The discussion between panellists and the audience was lively and in-depth, which questions ranging from “what character traits help you in your current jobs?” to “what can I do during my PhD that will help me achieve a career in scientific writing?”.

Career Event - From Academia to Industry: Career Progression for Women – 6th November 2014

We wanted to know more about how to make the career move from academia to industry, so we invited HR representatives from IBM, Roche and Dow to tell us about the typical job opportunities available in their companies for scientists like us, what they do to support women throughout their careers and what makes the perfect job application for them. We even heard from current employees at Dow and Roche about their day-to-day experiences at work, and had the opportunity for more discussion and networking at the Apéro afterwards.

Lecture Event - Gender Stereotypes: What They Look Like and What We Can Do – 26th September 2014

Professor Schubert, the ETH President's Gender Delegate, talked about gender stereotypes at this lunchtime lecture, followed by a lively discussion and an apéro. Over 50 women and men attended this event, which was chaired by Professor Donald Hilvert, the Head of the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences at ETH. Fun Event - Barbecue on the Rooftop – 7th August 2014

Our first ever BBQ took place on the VAC Lounge rooftop. There were about 25 ladies present, BBQ delicacies, lovely salads, amazing cakes, etc. and it only rained very briefly!

Career Event - What is it like being a woman at ... ? – 13th May 2014

Our first WiNS career event was a resounding success. There was a lively and open discussion between the panelists and the audience covering such diverse topics as: the different careers paths open to chemists, industry versus academia and the issues faced by women working in science. Over 60 ladies from the department attended and our panelists were Dr Sabine Geisse (Director at Novartis), Carmen Jacob (Consultant at BCG), Dr Katja Filippova (Research Scientist at Google), Natalia Braun (HR Business Partner at Lonza), Dr Martine Bourqui-Pittet (Leader at the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health) and Prof. Helma Wennemers (Professor of Organic Chemistry at ETH Zürich).

Launch Event – 11th February 2014

After months of preparation, getting permission from the Department, buying wine, baking cakes and sticking flyers in girls' toilets, the day to launch our new society finally arrived! There were about 65 women present, the cakes pretty much disappeared and we figured out that our ideas for WiNS had overwhelming support. The most common question we got asked? “Why haven’t you done this sooner!?”
